A new parish hall on the church grounds was completed and dedicated on December 1, 1923. Julia Howard Beylard Hall is used for Sunday fellowship, social events, parish meetings, and by St. Matthew’s Episcopal Day School. The Reverend Brewer established St. Matthew’s Hall (later known as St. Matthew’s School for Boys) in 1865 on a site adjacent to the church and parsonage. The school’s goals aspired to the highest ideals of Christian and secular training for boys . The school adopted a military system for training, discipline, and administration. The school received high ratings throughout the educational community but closed in 1915.

The former movie palace’s vaulted lobby is lined with gold, silver and bronze statues. You’ll find chevrons and swirls at every turn, but the theater’s absolute stunner is the sharp starburst chandelier that engulfs the auditorium’s ceiling in a golden latticework. Within three years many of the stained glass windows were removed, sent to Los Angeles for repair and cleaning, and reinstalled. The building’s footprint was 40 by 75 feet with a seating capacity of 200 people. The new church was built of stone that came from the Howard estate, and its entry faced Baldwin Avenue with a north-south configuration. The organ and vesting room were located at the south end of the building. The chancel window at the south end of the church was created in Belgium and crafted and shipped from New York. We went from serving 300 families a month to serving over 4,000 families in April of 2020 and the numbers kept climbing. Since April 2020, we have distributed over 700,000 boxes of groceries, produce, dairy and proteins with weekly drive-through distributions at various locations. This model also afforded minimal contact during COVID as recipients could simply open their trunk and have groceries loaded by volunteers. This type of wrap-around service center eliminates the burden on low-income individuals to travel to multiple locations and sit through lengthy intake for these additional services. Instead of offering a box of pre-selected items, qualified recipients will have a choice of what they receive. A recent study funded by the Morgan Stanley Foundation and conducted by Feeding America and University of Chicago included 28 food banks and 111 food pantries. The study overwhelmingly indicates that choice is a better way to run a food pantry because people can shop for the items their household needs and wants.

A chapel on the north side offers an arched entry with the Howard Monument still on the same spot, located next to the organ. The sanctuary is surrounded with carved stone and white travertine marble. The carved lace design of the reredo above the altar was built from material salvaged from the original church. The plaster and concrete of the ceiling have been painted to simulate wood.
There are eighteen stained glass windows, the majority set in gothic arches. Many of the windows were added over the years through the generous gifts of parishioners, and all but one are memorials. Our current rector, The Reverend Dr. Eric Kimball Hinds, arrived at St. Matthew’s in August of 2007 after serving as rector at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey for nine years. Reverend Hinds ably steered the parish through the 2008 recession and was instrumental in the expansion of the Day School building, which was completed in 2015. The expansion provides the school to offer two classes per grade from kindergarten through 8th grade. In 2019, Reverend Hinds organized a successful capital campaign to refurbish the Crocker organ and Roth bell tower as well as install protective window coverings over our cherished stained glass windows.

The Sisters of the Transfiguration, who were about to return to their mother house in Glendale, Ohio, after a number of years in Santa Rosa, accepted the Reverend Wilder’s invitation to start a school at St. Matthew’s. The school, under the direction of Sister Martha Mary, C.T., began with nursery and pre-nursery classes; a kindergarten was added in 1954.
St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church began as an idea in the little village of San Mateo as the Civil War was coming to an end. Like so many churches and parishes, it has weathered storms, celebrated happy times, and blossomed into a parish community that has prospered. The many organizations within the parish have supported efforts to continue Christian outreach and in-reach throughout the community, on a regional, national, and even global scale. Fellowship, education, and future parish upgrading projects are all positive signs of a robust community that is growing as the parish moves into the new century. On April 18, 1906, the city of San Francisco and the greater Bay Area experienced major earthquake destruction.
The mission of St. Matthew’s House has been to help those who, through circumstances in their lives, need a hand up. "If I hadn't gone to St. Matthews house, I would still actively be using...
